Additionally, a traveling photographic exhibit, Oklahoma: All That Southwest Jazz, sponsored by the Oklahoma Arts Council, is available to groups for a small fee through the Oklahoma Museums Association. Belgian gypsy jazz guitarist Django Reinhardt had little influence on Christian, but he was obviously familiar with some of his recordings. Christian was born in Bonham, Texas, but his guitar and had become a regional attraction. I went to his home and he played me Benny Goodman's “Rose Room” featuring Charlie Christian on guitar and when I heard that solo I realised that the sound I had been hearing was jazz and that experience changed my direction in life. Akin to Harlem of the 1930's – in spirit, if not in scope – Deep Deuce spawned such legendary figures as jazz guitarist Charlie Christian, “blues shouter” Jimmy Rushing, and internationally acclaimed writer, Ralph Ellison. Before Wes Montgomery, there was Charlie Christian; and luckily Benny Goodman seen the talent in him and utilized the advantage throwing him into his Sextet. Here, in after hours jam sessions, Christian would exchange choruses with Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Thelonius Monk, and other Bebop greats, as they developed this new style of Jazz. The jazz guitar festival and summer school began in the year 2000 when some extra money was made available by means of the Millennium Lottery Fund via the Arts Council of Wales. Gleason, Wes expressed just how strong Christian's influence was on him. Charlie Christian, he is one of the original guitar legends. Christian was a key developer of Bebop, the language of improvisation, guitar technique, and was one of the very first people ever to take an amplified guitar solo! He jammed with many of the big name performers traveling through Oklahoma City including Teddy Wilson and Art Tatum. Charles Henry “Charlie” Christian (July 29, 1916 – March 2, 1942). Christian's improvisational style is his greatest legacy.
